Rheumatism is a term which is used in describing the symptoms associated with pains in joints, surrounding soft tissue (connective tissue) and in the muscles. This term is no longer used by the modern doctors. It was widely used in the 14th century. That was the time when physicians did not have a clear understanding of rheumatism. In fact, they used to bundle all the painful disorders which were affecting the bones, muscles and the soft tissues and joints into one broad category which they labelled as rheumatism. In the modern medicine, this term is used to cover a various symptoms and health conditions ranging from inflammation to lower back pain.

Symptoms of rheumatism

Severe rheumatic symptoms are described as an ‘intense flowing pain.’ Individuals having rheumatic condition will experience muscle pain, joint pain or both. The pain resulting from inflammation will have varying degrees. This pain is usually accompanied by limitation of movement on the affected part of the body or stiffness of joints. This pain can be experienced in any joint including your spinal or knee joints and the other joints in your hips giving rise to back pain or neck pain. Any condition which can lead to inflammation and pain or limit the movements of joints can give rise to rheumatism symptoms.

Generalized rheumatism symptoms

This is the pain or symptoms which affect the various part of your body simultaneously. They are termed by medical doctors as rheumatic conditions or symptoms. The following the main types of rheumatic conditions which can affect the different parts or areas of your body.

  • Fibromyalgia-This is characterized by inflammation affecting both the connective tissues and muscles in the body.
  • Lupus, polymyositis, scleroderma, dermatomyositis– This includes all the immune illness which affect the connective tissues and the body muscles.
  • Polymyalgia rheumatic-This is a condition which affects the muscles of your thighs and shoulders.

Treatment options for rheumatism symptoms

A change in a person’s lifestyle and diet can significantly help in reducing the symptoms in the individuals suffering from rheumatism.

Pain –killing medication

This involves taking gels or pills prescribed by a medical doctor. These pills are readily available at the local pharmacies and can be taken even without the physician’s prescription. You should be careful when taking these painkillers to avoid over dependence on them.

 

Natural remedies

There are different types of natural remedies which are used in relieving joint and muscle pains. These include Arnica, essential oils and the Devil’s claw. Reducing the stress level and anxiety can also help in reducing the symptoms of rheumatism.
